For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to solve life’s greatest mysteries. When I was a little boy, I used to look up at the sky and wonder what was behind it. I decided “a brick wall” was the answer, which satisfied me for all of a few minutes until I thought of another question, “What’s behind the brick wall?”
At that age, I didn’t realise that asking such questions would lead to a long search for answers. As it turns out, I had to develop a life-changing illness before I could discover life beyond the brick wall.
In 2004, I was diagnosed with severe eczema. My body oozing and covered in sores, my skin falling off in chunks, Western doctors could do nothing to stop the progression of the disease. Alternative therapies also failed to bring me any relief.
As a last resort, I moved to the Peruvian Amazon to live among ayahuasca shamans. Shedding the Layers tells the story of my time there, my search for healing and how I found the answers to my questions about life.
